…BROADCASTING LIVE VIA SATELLITE FROM LACKLANLAND...
The image of Kenzi Grey, black braids swept back as she wore a tight fitting white shirt with the logo #CoolKids on it; behind her an enormous tapestry of a Firebird in flight, symbol of the Lacklan bloodline. The 30 students in Alexis Blake’s Ashville, North Carolina wrestling school clapped for the television and movie star as she smiled at the generous reception. Her old rival, Alexis, stood off to the side watching over her flock of trainees. As the applause died down, Kenzi addressed the masses.
“First thing, first…I would like to thank Lexi for asking me to speak with you all today. For those of you who don’t know our history, last year she and I had quite the intense rivalry which culminated in a no holds barred match that took place in Ladies All-Star Wrestling at Queen of the Ring in Las Vegas, and pretty much stole the entire show. I know that Lexi has said that match pretty much ended her in-ring career, but that is the risk that she and I ran…and that is the risk that all of you will run if you choose to make this business your life. She paused, peering into the screen as she looked over at her old foe. “I know Lexi ‘claims’ that match put her out of competition, but it sure looks like she can still go to me. What do you guys think?”
The class stood and clapped as they all turned to Alexis and bowed to their trainer. Alexis blushed as she waved for them to all sit back down. As they did, she mouthed to Kenzi, ‘I’m gonna fuck you up.’
Kenzi laughed as she held up her hands, then continued on. “I won’t keep you long, but there are a few points that I wanted to get across before I took a few questions.” She straightened herself as she addressed them. “All of you have your own motivations for wanting to do this…for some it's money, for others it’s fame, to others it could be something completely different. The important thing for you all to remember is to stay true to that thing that got you into the business, no matter what it is. If you ever lose sight of that, that’s the first clue that this is not the life for you.”
Kenzi pointed to a cut that was still visible on her lower lip and a severely bruised right hand, dark purple and slightly swollen. “These are wounds that I got last week in training with Katie Anderson, the current EPW Great Lakes Champion…not even in an actual match!” She raised her shirt and showed a row of bruises on her ribs and abdomen where she’d been hit with baseball bats by the number one contenders to the Championship Wrestling Coalition Tag Team Titles. “I got the hell beaten out of me last Friday night…there is hardly a place on my entire body that doesn’t hurt, but I would never trade any of this for a moment away from the ring. This has been my dream from the start, and while other things have come and gone, this has always been my passion. The day that it’s not…that’s the day that I stop doing this and walk away for good.”
She gingerly lowered her shirt and straightened herself. I don’t say any of this to scare you, I’m sure that Lexi has scared you guys plenty already.” The class laughed as they nearly all nodded in agreement. “The point is that this life is not for everyone. It is hard on your body, hard on your mind, and harder on your family…on your loved ones. You have to want it…and they have to want you enough to still be there when you come home too hurt to move, or when you’re…god forbid…laid up in a hospital in some nowhere town in the middle of the night. That is the reality of this business and what it means to be in in!”
She paused, allowing that to sink in. “Now…for the fun stuff! This business can be AMAZING! I have traveled the world and I have met people and been afforded opportunities to do things that I never thought possible! Despite all the struggles, I have LOVED every minute of this and would not trade it for anything!” She couldn’t help the smile on her face, “I spend nearly every day with my best friends and I laugh and have a ball at the same time. Yes, there is pain and danger, but there is also the fulfillment of performing in front of thousands of people and doing things that they can only dream of…” She smirked, “…and being cheered or booed for it.”
The students laughed and she laughed along with them. “Okay guys! I have time for a few questions, and then it’s back to your task master for more pain and punishment!”
The students had already prepared questions and they lined up one at a time to present them. A young girl with a deep voice spoke up first, “Ms. Grey, I have been following you since you signed with Empire Pro Wrestling. You put on an amazing display against the former EPW Champion, Nessa Wall in a losing effort. This Friday you face a woman with that same sort of stoic attitude, but with a ton of physical talent in Misha LeCavalier. Are you concerned about the possibility of going 0 and 2 in singles completion?”
“Absolutely, that is a concern!” she answered quickly, “I didn’t come to EPW to be a loser, a laughing stock, or a stepping stone. I have been that at the start of my career and I have NO desire to go back to it. There was no shame in losing to Nessa, she was the champion at the time…but this is the reality, I know that I can beat her and if I thought for a moment that I couldn’t, I wouldn’t have faced her because I would know that this sport isn’t for me.” She turned her attention to Misha, “I know that Misha is a HUGE talent and I know that I have my work cut out for me, but I know I can beat her and I have every intention of going out there and doing just that!”
The next student came up, a middle age man who was probably too old to just be getting his start, but there was obvious desire in his him. “Ms. Grey, you recently went on a bit of a tirade after finding out that two women in Ladies All-Star Wrestling would be getting a second opportunity at title matches at Queen of the Ring this month while yourself and 7 others had to fight for that same opportunity. My question is, how do you manage to stay motivated when you see others get opportunities thrown at them repeatedly while you have to fight and scratch for a chance to have a piece of that for yourself?”
Kenzi chuckled, “Great question, but the answer isn’t so simple. Yes, I am not happy with the fact that Mackenzie Roberts and Christina Millar, women that I have defeated are getting ‘do overs’ for titles after they both lost in title matches this year. They are being rewarded for attacking the champions instead of fighting their way to an opportunity like the rest of the women in QOTR. Now, I realize that management had to make a call, and they made it. I don’t have to like it or agree…all I can do is speak my mind…respectfully…” The class laughed at this, knowing her propensity to not be respectful at all. “…I’m not going to wish either of them well because they haven’t earned what they are getting, but all I can do is focus on the task at hand, and that task for me is to win the QOTR and finally earn something for myself in LAW that management can’t say that I did not.”
A third student, a young person that was so sexually ambiguous that no one could tell if it was a man or a woman. The person asked their question next, “You and Sarah Lacklan are now the official number one contenders to the EPW Tag Team Titles. However, after the attack on the two of you at Oblivion by Rylee Mckenzi and Tanner Halsey, you not only put your tag team title contendership on the line, but your career in EPW to get a match against them. That seemed like a rash and spur of the moment decision, do you regret putting so much up for a chance at revenge?”
Kenzi shook her head, “No! I don’t regret it at all! Sarah and I are perfect in tag team competition in EPW…we entered that match last Friday looking to compete against two other teams to prove that we could represent EPW. Mckenzi and Halsey ducked that match and decided to attack us since they were too afraid to face us. They thought that they would walk out to get a shot at the CWC titles without worrying about us, but that just won’t happen!” Kenzi sat forward, her face serious, “Like I said about Misha, if I didn’t think I could beat her, I wouldn’t be here…if I didn’t know that Sarah and I could beat those two cowards, I wouldn’t have risked so much for a chance to get our hands on them! If we lose, then I’ll say farewell to EPW and CWC because it’s obvious that we do have what it takes to cut it there.”
The last student asked a question, a young Asian girl with purple hair. “Can I be on Hexx?”
Kenzi answered her, deadpan, “Absolutely not!”
Alexis rolled her eyes as she ushered her students back to their mats. She looked into the camera at Kenzi, “Thank you for talking to my students Kenz. It was great to hear from you again!”
Kenzi winked at her, “Thank you for allowing me! Take care!”” She waved goodbye as the video feed ended…
