Kenzi tried her best to feel better about her performance at Conquest 09, but she couldn’t. Not even Melissa Reeves could lift her spirits much higher than a strained smile with talk of Kenzi’s dream of riding a kangaroo. Apparently that wasn’t going to happen, Melissa made that abundantly clear. Apparently kangaroos were not our friends…
"One more dream up in fucking smoke..." Kenzi was quickly running out of things to dream about.
She rolled out of bed in the strange hotel room she found herself in after going with Katie Anderson back to her hometown to check on her ailing father. Kenzi felt terrible for feeling bad over the lost to Nessa Wall when her friend was facing the very real possibility of losing her dad, but Kenzi had always been a selfish cunt…there wasn’t anything to be done about that.
…DING...
Kenzi picked up the phone and read the messages from her mother…quite possibly the LAST person she wanted to talk to, but…
Kenzi put her phone away as she turned to Sarah. She had been the first to console her after her loss…telling her how close she had come and saying that she would do better next time. Those words had been cold comfort at the time, but maybe a few more words of encouragement would be helpful…but they were not currently in the offering as Sarah was busy with her other Twitter obligations; there was no rest for The Firestarer.
To be fair, Sarah had done more than her share already, having attended to her bodily needs…but, she had hoped for more…
…MORE…
It triggered a warning inside her. She needed to be careful of wanting more. Sarah had fled to New York so that she could breathe last week when all Kenzi had wanted was to be with her. She didn’t want to further smother her and force her away again. She walked into the bathroom and closed the door behind her, sitting on the edge of the tub as she did what she could to reconcile what she would do next. It felt like she had nothing left after failing so spectacularly…
…DING...
Kenzi pulled out her phone, thinking that Sarah might have finished with her with her Twitter friends and foes and was sending her morning “Psssst” or even a butt for them to ogle, but it wasn’t from her. Instead, Andre Holmes reached out to try to lift her spirits…
It was nice of him…and while she listened, she didn’t hear him at all. This loss stung her deeply and she wasn’t going to be getting over it like it was just another ‘L’ because it wasn’t. It was a chance to prove that she was more than her mother made her out to be. She was more than the undeserving girl that Amy Jo Smyth and Nessa Wall said she was. No matter how ‘well’ she did…she didn’t do well enough. She didn’t leave her mark on the champion and Nessa had already put Kenzi in her rearview mirror with thoughts of her next challenge in Smith Jones.
Kenzi sighed as she put her head in her hands and closed her eyes…what did she have to look forward to now that her biggest opportunity to date had slipped through her fingers. She wanted to break down and cry…she wanted to throw herself out the nearest window…as if that would make things better…
…DING...
She glanced down at her phone and saw the tweet from Sarah…
She wiped her face and steeled herself. She needed to pull herself together…for the sake of holding on to what she had left, if nothing else. She didn’t know if this was her last chance to make a splash in EPW or in wrestling as a whole…but she’d have to get her shit together quickly. This chance had slipped through her fingers…Melissa and Andre had said there would be more…if they were right…she needed to be ready to seize it…no matter what it took this time.
She needed to bounce back from this...she had to...
