Over the last week, Kenzi had been a mental wreck. Leaving Song had been the hardest decision of her life in recent memory. She knew that Song loved her, but she also knew that love was not absolute. Song would say that it was…but that wasn’t true. Song loved the part of Kenzi that wasn’t selfish and wicked…Song loved the part of Kenzi that always lay bubbling just beneath the surface and only appeared when she was not around. For that, Kenzi could not blame Song for her confusion when she finally left her for good…
…she’ll see that I was never worthy of her…in time...
In fact, Kenzi now knew that she was hardly worthy of anyone at all. Every relationship had ended in disaster…each failure taking away a little piece of spirit until soon, there would be nothing left to take. This one had hurt the most…but it would be the last. Love was for people who could deny who they were for the people they cared about. Kenzi could no longer do that, especially when it hurt Song so much; and herself, by proxy.
Kenzi needed to get away; to hit the road and forget about the life she had just cast aside…the good person she had hurt with her selfishness. A visit to Nina had opened her eyes to the fact that the pain of her break up was still weighing on her heavily. Nina, her Ma, had only wanted to help soothe the hurt she felt, but Kenzi hadn’t wanted to talk about it; it was too soon…too raw. She apologized for her emotional state and turned her attention to her movie project; ironically, the thing that had led to the dissolution of her relationship in the first place.
Kenzi headed up the East coast and stopped off with a longtime friend. Meeting with Katie; the star of her upcoming movie, the two of them scouted movie locations and talked about Kenzi’s ideas to make the film much more gritty and dark...
…which was ironically, just the way I felt at the moment...
Katie proved to be very receptive to Kenzi’s ideas…which was so refreshing, because she had no intentions of making this film lighthearted in any way. All of the pain and angst she felt, she had poured into the script and it was proving to be the best medicine of all.
The one bit of uncomfortableness had come when Katie chastised her about the strife with Sarah Lackan. For the past several weeks, the two co-stars had been at one another’s throats and it was only recently that the two had come to a truce, of sorts. Kenzi put Katie’s mind at ease, letting her know that she was on her way to Lackanland to do what she could to repair the damage the two had done to the promotion of the film.
Arriving in Lacklanland was like going to another world for Kenzi. It seemed to her to be an odd blend of the old world and the new. She felt woefully out of touch and self-conscious about her every interaction, but thankfully Sarah had proven to be a perfect hostess…
…even if she did lie about how great the pancakes were in Lackanland; I swear, I have no idea why she keeps going on about them when there is not a pancake to be seen here for fucking miles...
Still, despite some of the strangeness, Kenzi realized that she shared more in comment with Sarah than she realized. Both of them had come up in a world with great expectations put upon them…and both rebelled, not only against those same expectations, but against anything and everything that was considered…normal. Sarah taught Kenzi a lovely new song and showed her the proper way to dance at a Ball…all of it served to ease her mind and help her forget the life she had left behind.
The next day brought new challenges and a wonderful surprise that she hadn’t expected. The return of an old friend had put Kenzi over the moon! Sabrina Ramirez had made her long awaited return from an injury she had suffered last year. Kenzi had considered Sab one of her closest friends, not only because they were so close in age, but because the girl just enjoyed having a good time. After the break up with Song, she was in desperate need of a distraction and spending time with Sab would be just that.
The addition of Sarah and Stephanie McDiddle had also helped to up the fun quota…
…the four of us together was sure to end poorly or fantastically; perhaps a little of both...
Fake ID’s all around for those that needed them, and before anyone knew it they were sloshed to the gills and singing their collective hearts out at a New York City club and having the time of their lives…
…all my troubles were washed away by copious amounts of alcohol and free spirited revelry that I had denied myself for far too long; this was the person that I really was and that I felt I could not share with anyone who got too close to me...
The night, which had begun on such a high note, took a sour turn when a drunken club goer set his lecherous intentions on Sab. Kenzi, acting with a surprising amount of maturity, despite what she had imbibed, acted as mother hen as she walked Sab to her car to ensure she got home safely. Kenzi might have been a destroyer in some people’s eyes, but she was a fierce protector of those she considered her friends.
No sooner had Kenzi gotten Sab into her car, the drunken sot appeared, proclaiming his intentions to the young girl and generally making an ass out of himself. He jumped on the hood of her car, even as he sought to expose himself to show Sab what she was missing out on…
…honestly…it really wasn’t very much; but I was wearing my ‘whiskey goggles’ so I could have been wrong...
Kenzi yanked the man off the car, allowing Sab to leave…then for good measure she gave his head a stomp; not to prevent him from attacking her, but for putting his less-than-impressive junk on display as if that was really going to be the way to a girl’s heart.
Things have a way of escalating quickly…and apparently Sarah is one to just go with the flow…
…that ‘flow’ involved her punching out a cop that was responding to the scene to rightly apprehend me for my assault on ‘Tick Dick Dudley’...
Stephanie jumped in to prevent Kenzi and Sarah from getting sent to jail, but that only ended up with all three women being sent to jail that night…
…the night was going to end fantastically poorly after all...

25 February 2017
While Stephanie and Sarah were being processed, Kenzi was led back to the cell by a female officer who wore an apologetic look on her face. “Sorry that no one answered your calls. Maybe you can try again in the morning. If you don’t get bailed out, you’re going to have to stay through the weekend”
Kenzi ran her hands down her face, “I have a match on Sunday! I can’t be in jail!”
The officer shrugged, “Hopefully your friend can get you out. Sorry…” she said as she walked off.
Kenzi walked over and threw herself on the bench, holding her head as if to keep it from spinning right off her shoulders. “This…is…such…BULLSHIT!”
It was not long before Sarah was led into the cell by another officer. And even though her red eyes were dulled by the copious amount of drink and drugs she had consumed that evening, she was clearly a little ball of fury. “And another thing! That pig deserved it!”
The officer ignores her as she closes the cell door behind her and walks away. Apparently they had been having this argument for quite some time.
Sarah kicks the cell door. “No one lays their hands on royalty, damnit! Do you not know who I am? I’m the BLOOD PRINCESS!”
The officer just walks away.
“I hope you burn!” She pale girl turns to face her friend. “Hey, babe.”
Kenzi glances up and her demeanor changes instantly as she sees her friend standing there. She gets up and puts her arms around her, kissing her cheek. “I’m so sorry Sarah! This is all my fucking fault! If I hadn’t called you and Steph, you wouldn’t be here right now!” Kenzi stood back, a severe frown upon her face, “Sar…I’m sorry…I didn’t mean for any of this to happen. I just cannot stop screwing up!” She began pacing in a tight circle, “If you get into trouble…I will never forgive myself!” She paused, looking at Sarah, “OH GOD! YOU’RE IN JAIL! YOU’RE ALREADY IN TROUBLE!” Kenzi plopped down on the bench, holding her head in hands.
Sarah doesn’t miss a beat and drops to her knees right in front of Kenzi. She takes her dark hands into her own pale hands and moves them away from her face, forcing her to look into her eyes, black into red. “Hey! First of all, that was fuckin’ awesome. Did you see me deck that pig? It was great! And second…” She pauses to make sure Kenzi is paying attention. “This is not your fault. You are a great friend, Ken. It is not your fault that creeper was trying to get all over Sabrina. You did the right thing. And I would be damned if I left you all alone out there. And thirdly…”
Sarah finds herself absently caressing Kenzi’s thumb with her own…
“In case you forgot…” she winks. “I make trouble wherever I go. Kinda my thing.”
Kenzi can’t help but to laugh at this, “Yeah? Sounds familiar…” she looks down at her hand in Sarah’s and she covers it with her other hand. “Thank you…for not being upset with me over this. I know I am going to catch hell. I left messages all over Los Angeles.” She sighed, “Mel is going to kill me…assuming I ever get out of here.” A look of panic colored her cheeks, “I have to get out before Sunday! I have a match in D.C.! I can’t miss it!”
“Hey! This is the No Panic Zone, right? Our Truth Zone? It will be okay. I…” Sarah pauses, her white cheeks coloring slightly. “I called my sister. She is in Louisiana with Adrien but she said she will take care of it. Super Stacy to the rescue, or something like that. We just need to be patient. We will be out of this pit of the Abyss before you know it!”
Kenzi pulls her hand free from Sarah, then leans in and hugs her tightly again. “Thank you for being so calm after all of this! I am freaking out so hard right now! I took that Drive and it feels like everything is moving 100 miles an hour!” She shook as she held Sarah, “If it doesn’t stop soon…I am probably going to have a goddamn heart attack!”
Sarah smiles, closing her eyes, as she hugs Kenzi back as hard as she can. “Take it from someone who knows: You can either fight it...or ride it. I choose to ride the flames, babe.”
Kenzi sat back, wiping her eyes as her smile returned, “Flames huh? I think this place is plenty hot enough right now, but it will probably seem like home after everyone jumps my ass in the morning! All I did was just prove what everyone says about me is true…I’m a complete screw up.” She pauses, dropping her head into her hands, “Oh my god! I called Song…I left her a message! I am so fucking stupid! She doesn’t need this…she doesn’t need to be hearing from me right now!” She leans back against the cold and unforgiving wall, even as she continued to beat herself up. “I couldn’t leave well enough alone…”
Sarah leans forward and lays her head on her friend’s lap, rubbing the top of her legs with her hands, trying to calm her. “You are not a screw up, Ken. You are a wonderful, amazing, fucking FIERCE person.” She then whispers: “…the world does not deserve you…”
Kenzi grins, whispering back, “…I hope this isn’t a suicide pact…” She chuckles, despite herself, rubbing Sarah’s head. “Thank you for being brilliant and wonderful Sar. I really needed that…especially after…last week.” She sighs, “This…tonight…it’s just further evidence that I have no business being close to anyone. I always end up doing stupid shit and causing trouble.” She snickered, but it was cold and mirthless, “…maybe the world doesn’t deserve me…or what I am doing to it…”
Sarah practically purrs as Kenzi rubs her head, but she snaps her head up immediately as Kenzi stopped talking, anger making those impossible red eyes flash. “First of all, shut your face. You being close to me, like, changed my life, you know? It’s like in Wicked: Because I knew you, I have been changed for the better, for good.” Her face softens as she sneaks a quick peek up and down Kenzi’s torso. “And just like how what happened tonight is not your fault, it is not your fault the world cannot handle you. Are you too fierce, too hot. If someone cannot handle you? Then they do not deserve you. If someone will not ride the flames, then leave them behind. And you, babe? You’re like a rainbow...on fire!”
Her smile returns, “I love listening to you talk. You aren’t like anyone else that I have ever met.” She pulls Sarah up, sitting her next to her on the bench. She leans her head against Sarah, “I don’t always get locked up, but when I do…I’m glad that it’s with you.” She takes Sarah’s hand and holds it, closing her eyes, “Hopefully they get us out soon…I’m fucking starving. I could eat the world’s biggest stack of pancakes right now!”
Sarah nearly swoons as Kenzi compliments her, but her entire body goes stiff with Kenzi’s last few words. She can feel her body heat up, and she stamps down the sudden and nearly overwhelming desire to get very personal with her best friend. So she closes her eyes and takes a deep breath through her nose and slowly lets it out her mouth, willing her body to cool off…it wasn’t working. “I...I am sure we will get to...eat...soon, love.”
Kenzi echoes, almost half asleep, “I hope so…I can’t wait much longer…”
Sarah groans. “I know the feeling. Like I am going to burst…”
…Stephanie was placed in holding with Sarah and I following her booking, and though she quickly secured her release, she stayed behind with the two of us and showed her solidarity with her sisters in arms; for that…I am eternally grateful...
It wasn’t until 7:00 am that the three finally walked out as free women…all changed by their experience together, closer in some ways, more distant in others. Only time would tell what would happen next between the three of them…
…she’ll see that I was never worthy of her…in time...
In fact, Kenzi now knew that she was hardly worthy of anyone at all.
