CHAPTER XXXVI: SACRED BLOOD
OUTSIDE MADISON CHAPEL
Empire City
Daria Knight stared at the monitor, her eyes wide in amazement at the carnage that ‘The Angel’ had wrought in Hofburg in Western Rome. Buildings were in rubble, fires raged, chaos and panic were everywhere. when she had given her the pieces of the lance and provided her with the location of the spearhead that would complete the weapon, she had no idea of the havoc it could cause...until now.
“Truly, an awesome sight to behold…and it is all because of you.”
Daria glanced over at the hooded figure, her ‘benefactor’ for lack of better term. He had orchestrated all of this since the beginning. Carefully directing the burning of the One God Churches and eroding the faith of the people…turning them to his own ends. Now, it was time to reap the rewards, now she would sit at the right hand of God…himself.
“Now…there is but a single task left to perform, and when that is done…I shall take my rightful place on high. I would not ask this task of you my child…I doubt you would find it particularly palatable.”
“Master, I…”
The hooded figure phased through the door of the limousine, like a ghost. Only his parting words hung in the air to remind her that he had been there at all.
“Watch for the Angel.”
Daria opened the door and got out of the car, still unsure of her mission.
"What do I do?"
"Be ready if she does not cooperate."
The robes of the mysterious figure billowed in the wind like wisps of smoke as he made his way to the doors of Madison Chapel, no doubt to introduce himself to her brother…personally. Across from her, Reaver and Vixxxen sat transfixed as they watched him walk through the door without bothering to open it. Vixxxen sat with her mouth agape at the sight, but Reaver was far from being quiet on what they had just witnessed.
“Not to be a killjoy or anything, but are you sure that ‘is checks are gonna clear? I mean, ‘e don’t look the type to carry around a wallet.”
Daria didn’t bother to look at her as she answered.
“Money will be the least of your worries soon. We are going to own the entire world…and everything beyond it…”
Reaver narrowed her eyes at this statement, then shrugged it off. Her partner, Vixxxen, seemed less eager to just accept this on blind faith. The motivation had started out as money, but now things had taken a turn. All of their hard work hadn’t made them rich, it had made them pawns in a game in which they didn’t even know the rules.
That was bad…that was very bad indeed…
INSIDE MADISON CHAPEL
Moments Later...
Brandon had been staring at his own television as the news of Anka's attack in Hofburg was all over the news. He hadn't known what her mission was after she left a few days earlier, but apparently it was nothing good. This confirmed it and now he wondered where she would go next...what she would do. Stacy had warned him that she was not at all what she appeared to be...this seemed to bare out her words in the most horrific way possible. So much death and so much carnage, but oddly, the devout of Empire City didn't see a monster...they saw her as God's vengeance, chipping away at the foundation of Rome.
Madness.
He thought he heard a voice calling for him and he got up and ran to the main part of the church, hoping it was Arella or maybe even Stacy. This was no time to be out on the streets. It was dangerous, far too dangerous outside tonight. He paused as he saw the unfamiliar figure drifting down the aisle like a spirit. He took a cautious step back, wondering if this was another specter like that of his former alter boy who had come to warn him of the danger Anka posed.
"Who are you? I..."
He never saw the blow that sent him hurdling through the air and smashing against the wall.
He tried to catch his breath, but there was no use. With a hard thud, his limp form was shoved against the wooden cross behind the alter. The face of his tormentor, obscured by a billowing hood, came within millimeters of Brandon's.
"You're probably wondering who I am...what quarrel do I have with you? Don't worry priest, I will explain. It's the least I could do for all that you are going to do for me tonight...for all that you are going to do for everyone."
Brandon tried to talk, but his voice had fled him when all of the air had been knocked from his lungs.
"I am no one, but if you must call me by a name, then let that name be Revenant, first of the Children of Lilith...Mother and rightful ruler of creation. Do you know of whom I speak priest?"
Brandon's eyes fluttered as his head drooped and a moans of pain escapes him. He gets a gnarled hand around his throat, forcing him to look into Revenant's infinitely cold stare.
"My mother...your mother...she demands to have her throne back and that requires sacrifice Brandon...your sacrifice. The last good man in all of Empire City...His Lamb."
Revenant sneers at Brandon in disgust.
"Burn a few One God churches...turn the people away from the Father and watch His power over them wane whilst our great Mother grows her army...one that is ready to claim both Heaven and Earth. The Angel will serve her purpose...as will you Lamb...as will we all."
Revenant moves closer so that the thin, dry skin on his forehead presses against Brandon's heavily sweating cranium.
"An army of our great Mother's children wait outside the gates for admittance...home. You are the key Lamb...but Anka...she will be their guide."
He pulled away and looked up, grinning viciously behind his dark cowl.
"Right on time...but first..."
Brandon's screams tore through the church and pierced the night, where a glow appeared in the sky...growing larger and more furious by the moment...
OUTSIDE MADISON CHAPEL
Madison Chapel had been the site of many truly awe inspiring events within the annals of Empire City… and tonight would be no exception. With Western Rome ablaze, the wayward ‘angel’ makes her way back to Madison Chapel and back to the leader of the ‘One God’ faith… but what she finds there will change everything…
A trail of fire blazed across the sky, it’s intensity seeming to diminish as it slowed. The flame winked out as the ‘angel’ descended in front of the church, her glorious wings now restored. Slung across her back…the Spear of Destiny… a relic said to have pierced the side of the son of the ‘One God’ imbuing it with untold power. Anka had put it to a terrible purpose… the slaughter of innocents in the name of revenge for a crime none could remember or be held liable for. All the same, death had come on swift wings…literally.
Anka walked to the front doors of the church and as she reached for the handle, she paused. Her empathic powers were amplified and almost instantly she could feel a malevolence inside that was both old beyond counting and foul beyond reckoning. She threw her shoulder into the door and rocked it off it’s hinges as she ran inside. Almost immediately, her senses were assaulted by the acrid smell of blood, mingled with decay. She screamed as she ran into the building, not knowing what she’d find.
“BRANDON!!”
She called out his name, even before she saw him… but when she did… she stopped dead in her tracks. The sight before her brought back memories that she had done her best to forget but could not. She put a trembling hand to her mouth to stifle the cry as she saw Brandon nailed to the cross that hung behind his pulpit… crucified just has she had once been in a time before counting. She ran to him as she screamed.
“NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!”
Falling to her knees before him as she looked up and hoped for a sign of life. He stirred slowly… looking down at her, his face racked with pain.
“A-Anka…”
“I’m here Brandon… j-just hold on… I’ll get you down from there!!”
As she stood up and reached for him, a cruel and raspy laugh echoed from behind her and she turned at once to face it… though nothing could have prepared her for what her eyes now saw. A hooded figure floating upon the crest of an ethereal wind… a menacing looking scythe in his hands.
For an instant… she believed that this was Death incarnate come to claim Brandon… but it’s words revealed it’s true nature and intentions.
“Anka de Jairus… what I would have given to have personally bore witness to the carnage you wrought in Western Rome on this night! Such a rich feeding ground… wasted…”
Regret hung in the air like thin wisps of smoke… but they disappeared just as quickly as the hooded creature drew nearer still.
“You do not know my name… but know this Anka… you and I share a history… and we share a great destiny… I…”
Anka charged at him, tears streaming from her black eyes. She roared in a mixture of agony and rage as she sought to plow him under. Instead, to her astonishment, she merely passed right through him. She smashed through three rows of pews and crashed into a banister, nearly knocking it loose from it’s moorings. She turned and stared at him through her dark ringlets of hair.
“WHAT ARE YOU?!!”
The menacing figure swung it’s scythe through the air as it made it’s grand proclamation.
“I am Revenant… and I was old when the world was new child. I have bore witness to things that not even one so old as you can hardly imagine!!”
"...there are none older than me..."
Anka spat out as she moved with a swiftness that no mortal eye could follow as she charged him again… with similar results. She hurdled through him and crashed into the side of the pulpit. She turned again, wiping a trickle of blood from her mouth. Revenant turned to face her again, chuckling as he reached up and pulled the hood away from his head, revealing his face...a face that made Anka's blood run cold even as the memory of it crashed into her like a tidal wave.
It was the face of the Roman dog that had taken Arella from her thousands of years ago. Butchered and defiled her, then sealed the two of them in a cave to rot together. She had sat there in the darkness holding her dying child in her arms until she turned to dust. The scream that tore from her was unlike anything remotely human. She threw herself at him again and again, passing through him and crashing into the walls with reckless abandon.
“Cease this… and listen!! I would tell you all that you need to know, for I am not your enemy… we share a common foe!!”
Anka was in a murderous rage as she reached behind her and drew out the Spear and swung it wildly at the specter before her. The tip of the spear shore through the left shoulder of Revenant only about a half an inch, but the effects were immediate as a howl of pain escaped him and he reached up to the spot were his cloak was now torn.
“AAAARRRGGHHHHH!!! BRAT OF A CHILD!!! CEASE THIS AND LISTEN!!! DO NOT MAKE ME HURT YOU!!”
Anka stood up, her broad wings fanning out as her face was still just a twisted mask of pure hatred.
“So… you can be hurt after all… and what can be hurt… CAN BE KILLED!!”
She swung the Spear down and Revenant had little choice but to parry her mighty blow with one of his own. Spearhead met scythe again and again as sparks flew. Revenant backed away as he did little more than defend himself against the terrible onslaught of the enraged woman… her power magnified by the mighty spear she sought to drive into him.
“YOU WOULD DEFEND THAT SACK OF ROTTING MEAT WHEN HE WOULD CONDEMN YOU JUST AS GOD HAS FOR CENTURIES PAST?!!”
Anka twirled around, bringing the spear in a spinning arc that tore it’s way through Revenant’s midsection.
“ARRRRRRRGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!”
He staggered back and in the instant he knew that he would have to strike in order to prevent her from pressing the advantage she had managed to gain with her initial assault. Revenant swung his scythe and struck her in the face with the blunt end, staggering her and brought the weapon around and knocked the spear from her hands and sent it clattering across the floor. Anka reached out for the spear as it rolled away… not wanting her one advantage to escape her. This was the mistake that Revenant had waited for. He kicked her down to the floor and brought the scythe down and drove it right through her shoulder, pinning her to the floor like an insect. Anka’s face was a mask of pure pain, but she refused to scream as she merely growled through bloodied teeth. He reached down and wrapped a powerful hand around her throat.
“LISTEN TO ME!!! I AM NOT YOUR ENEMY!! Even now… your supposed God sits on His throne in Heaven and laughs at you as you wallow in your ignorance! He has barred you from paradise… all the while taunting you with it’s promise!! You are not alone in this... OPEN YOUR EYES AND SEE THE TRUTH FOR YOURSELF!!”
From the cross, Brandon wearily looked up.
“…noooooooooooooo…”
Revenant glared at him.
“Silence!! I will feast on your soul soon enough…”
The distraction was all that Anka needed as she grabbed the spear and smacked him with it. As he reeled from the blow, she grabbed it and aimed with both hands and drove it into Revenant’s chest.
“AAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!”
A spark of fire burst forth as the cloaked figure seemed to literally fly back away from her, rolling across the floor and holding the smoldering wound in his chest. Anka tore the scythe from her shoulder and tossed the rusted thing aside. She flew up and descended down on his prone form, putting the spearhead to his throat.
“ENOUGH OF YOUR LIES FOUL BEAST!!! RETURN TO THE FIREY ABYSS FROM WHICH YOU CAME!!!”
“Mother!! Noooooooooo!!!”
Anka froze as she looked up and saw Arella standing before her… looking exactly as she last remembered inside the cave so many long centuries past. The young girl ran to her, then stopped as she looked down at Revenant. She kneeled before them, even as she gently guided Anka’s hand holding the spear away from Revenant’s neck. Anka did not fight this as she merely stared at the young girl with shock and confusion. This was no mere look-a-like… this was her little angel from so long ago… the girl she had given up Heaven for… only to be ‘cursed’ by God and condemned to earth for all time. The young girl wiped the tears from Anka’s face, then turned to Revenant and lifted his head and laid it lovingly in her lap.
“Father… all is well… for she will now see the foul duplicity of her false God.”
Anka fell back as the girl’s words seemed to hit her like a physical blow, the Spear falling from her hands. Revenant sat up and looked at the beleaguered ‘angel.’
“She speaks true Anka… think back to that time of long ago when you last had paradise snatched from you. Your God said that Heaven was not for our child in the midst of your sacrifice… then He condemned you here among His filth. Know that it was all a test… a cruel joke played upon you by your so-called Father! He never planned to admit you to Heaven… you were merely His plaything… but now that you see with NEW eyes… the game has changed… has it not?”
Anka staggered back away from them, crawling back to the front of the church, until she backed against the cross that Brandon was hung on. She looked up at him, hoping beyond hope that he could spare her this lie of all lies.
“B-Brandon!! I… I…”
“Anka… d-don’t lis…”
Revenant stood as Arella retrieved his scythe for him.
“You know it to be true… and the false prophet on yon cross also knows it to be so! His ‘God’ is a cruel one… testing His flock and punishing the faithful with His mockery of what is truly not a blessing at all!”
Arella handed him is weapon, then she scurried to retrieve the fallen Spear. She walked up to Arella and handed it back to her. Revenant floated up as he addressed her once more.
“Our Great Mother's army stands ready to be led by one such as you! As I am bound here on earth… also condemned… only you can traverse the plains and batter down His gates! Only you can avenge the wrong He has done to you… and our Great Mother. END HIS MOCKERY!!! SET THE HEAVENS AFLAME ANKA!!!”
Brandon called down to her.
“N-nooo… you must n-not listen!! G-God loves you… He h-has…”
“LIED TO YOU MOTHER!!”
Arella cleaved to Anka as she looked up at Brandon… her eyes shimmering with unnatural light.
“He denied her… even after she did as He commanded! He should be made to answer for His crimes! He should be made to pay for what He has done to us all!!”
Brandon called down to her.
“A-Anka… please…”
She stood slowly… looking at Brandon, then the little girl, and then Revenant. She lowered her head… lost in thought. Everything she had been through had led to this moment… the threads of her tale had been sewn together… and the tapestry it formed was both dark and terrible.
“Anka… d-don’t do anything t-that… you’ll r-regret…”
Brandon’s words were all that were needed to make things clear. She turned to him…
“My life is nothing but regret…”
“AAAAAAAHHHHHHRRRRGGHHHHHH!!!!”
Anka rammed the Spear of Destiny into Brandon’s side… even as tears tinged with blood ran down her face.
“If you love Him… go to Him… tell Him that His daughter is coming...HOME…”
As Brandon fell limp on the cross, Revenant rushed forth to feed on him and replenish his lost strength, but before he could, shots rang out.
BLAM, BLAM, BLAM, BLAM, BLAM, BLAM, BLAM
The bullets passed harmlessly through Revenant, but they stuck Anka with pinpoint accuracy… bringing her down to her knees. They all turned to the entranceway as Detective Stacey Jordan rushed into the building, still firing her weapon wildly now as she saw Brandon nailed to the cross.
BLAM, BLAM, BLAM, BLAM, BLAM, BLAM, BLAM, BLAM, CLICK, CLICK, CLICK…
“AHHHH”
Stacey fell to the floor in a heap as she was struck from behind, her gun falling sliding harmlessly away. As Arella helped Anka back to her feet, Revenant turned and saw Brandon Knight’s sister, Daria and her two hired assassins standing over the unconscious woman’s body. Revenant smiled at her… as she once more proved herself a valuable ally.
“Daria… you have done well…”
He bowed as he reached down and grabbed Stacey by the scruff of her neck and dragged her up to the pulpit and threw her at the foot of the cross. She turned to Revenant, after casting a callous eye at her brother’s body.
“It was my pleasure… how else might we be of service?”
Before he could answer, Anka got back to her feet and looked at Revenant, then turned to Brandon's lifeless body.
“He's mine...”
She reached up and pulled the Spear from Brandon’s side… callously wiping the blood from the spearhead on Stacey’s back.
“…take her if you need someone to eat. I have one last stop before I pay a visit to my Father.”
Revenant gave a reluctant nod of approval.
“Go then… as my Mother's army is made ready.”
Anka reached up and pulled Brandon down, tearing him free. Stacey reached up to stop her, but she got a violent kick to the ribs for her trouble. She carried Brandon’s lifeless body as she walked out of the church, casting a sidelong glance at Reaver and Vixxxen as they watched her walk out. Reaver couldn't help it as her claws extended and her hands trembled with anger. She stared at her partner as she whispered.
"...why in the bloody fuck are we 'elpping that gods-damn bird...?"
Vixxxen grabbed her partner to silence her. The feeling of unease she had was now sending off warning bells inside her head. The two of them had been duped, this wasn't about money...this was all about death and they would be next if they didn't beat a hasty retreat soon.
Hot salty tears flow down the face of Detective Jordan. She cries for the man she loved… now dead at the hands of the hellspawned beast that she had warned him about. She felt every bit of the pain that Brandon Knight had been through, but the man of God did not have the exclusive patent on pain this night. Out of the corner of her eyes, Stacey sees the flicker of a rusted blade. With a sudden wrenching blow she feels the blade plunging through her, and impaling her to the cross… leaving her hanging there awkwardly, her arms draped over the crossbeams.
“Hello pretty pretty.”
Says Revenant as he floats beside Stacey. He stares coldly into Stacey’s wide pain-filled eyes, her mouth soundlessly forming the name of her beloved.
“B-Bran-don…”
“Yes...Such pain. Such anguish. It gives the soul such a great flavor.”
Says Revenant as he slowly touches down to the stone floor. He stands in front of the critically injured form of the policewoman, breathing in deeply, inhaling her very being.
“Yes...Give yourself to me. Give yourself to me as you never could give yourself to that sack of rotting meat I nailed to the cross. He never wanted you...but I do!”
In a final act of defiance, she spat in Revenant's face and he backhanded her with such force that her neck nearly snapped. He roared and grabbed her by the throat, but he recoiled as he was thrown back by a volley of gunfire that tore into him now that he was weakened and unable to render himself intangible. He and Daria both turned as a blonde woman, flanked by several other men in heavy body armor flooded into the church, guns in hand as they sent round after round into him, forcing him to retreat with Daria and Arella fast behind him.
Agent Sloan kept her gun aimed as she surveyed the rest of the church for threats, directing the others with a series of hand gestures. When she was sure that the threat was gone, she ran to the front of the church where Stacey hung, seemingly lifeless with a massive scythe pinning her in place. She ran her hands down her face, the look of defeat she now wore was undeniable. They had tracked Anka all the way back here from Hofburg, only to arrive moments too late.
"Shit."
Michelle Andretti walked up and placed a hand on her shoulder.
"I told you back in Hofburg that we...OH GOD!"
Michelle moved past Sloan as Stacey twitched. She checked her pulse, then called to her men.
"GET A MEDIVAC! SHE'S STILL ALIVE!"
Sloan looked at Stacey and shook her head.
"Damn it girl, you're tougher than a five dollar steak."
They had come to stop Anka and retrieve the Spear, but this was a consolation prize, of sorts...assuming she lived. Sloan walked to the open door and stared out into the night...wondering what other threats had eluded...
SEVERAL BLOCKS AWAY...
Revenant howled in pain as he felt his power ebbing away. The battle with Anka had weakened him and now he was barely able to keep moving after being forced to flee from mortals...humiliating. He stopped in a darkened alleyway as Daria and Arella came to his side to catch him before he fell from his injuries.
"I...I must feed! I must have a body...I MUST HAVE ONE NOW!"
Daria spoke up.
"...there are two others...you may take your pick..."
Daria looked around frantically for Reaver and Vixxxen, but they had fled long before the shooting had even started. She called to them, but it was useless, they were long gone..
"WELL?!"
Daria blinked, and turned back to Revenant.
"I..."
He grabbed her by the throat, pulling her to him as she kicked and flailed against the ground.
"Then...you'll do...for now..."
Daria screamed as she was 'rewarded' for her part in her brother's demise...
GATEWAY PARK
The familiar location of Gateway Park was filled with One God followers. Since the news of the events of what had happened in Hofburg had hit, the faithful had been out in mass, come to the sight of her wonderous resurrection. The crowd had gathered in the hopes that she would return...she would return and tell them what to do next. The answer was short in coming as people turned to the sky, gasped and pointed.
“THE ANGEL!!!”
“SHE’S COME BACK!!”
Their cheers soon turn to screams of terror as they see the bloodied, lifeless body of Father Brandon Knight in her arms. Anka descends to the head of the massive flock… her broad wings billowing out behind her.
“Listen my children… for our Father’s herald is dead… killed by the enemies of peace… butchered by enemies of justice… SLAIN BY THE ENEMIES OF GOD!!”
Muttered accusations flowed through the crowd like a wave, and so did anger and fear. Anka watched this… with great personal satisfaction before she addressed them again.
“EVEN NOW… a massive army marches on the gates of Heaven… just as their demon-spawn rally their strength here! They seek to break the seven seals and unleash the End Days. I must go to help fight the coming war in Heaven…”
Panic grips the group as they all cry out.
“NOOOOO!! YOU MUST STAY!!!”
“DON’T LEAVE US!!!”
“WHO WILL PROTECT US?!!”
“WHO WILL LEAD US?!!”
She was barely able to contain her smile… for this is just the reaction she had hoped for. She gently laid Brandon’s body down.
“FATHER KNIGHT WAS A GOOD MAN...a very good man…”
Her voice trailed off as this bit of truth struck her. He was a good man, but she had killed him...to kill the last part of herself that still held out hope that she could be redeemed. She was all vengeance now, but this one final act would allow her closure. She eyed the crowd, looking for the one person she knew would be there. She smiled when she saw her, then beckoned her forward. The young girl who's brother Brandon had healed and whom she had saved came through the crowd. The girl walked up and covered her mouth as she knelt down before the ‘angel’ and the body of Father Knight.
“What's your name girl.”
She looked up at Anka, tears welling in her eyes.
"A-Abby...Abby Aldis."
Anka took her hand and laid it on Brandon's body. She leaned in close to her.
"...bury him at the Chapel Abby...he'd like that..."
She stared at the man and slowly nodded, then looked at Anka.
"...what will you do? What will happen to us with you gone...?"
"...nothing good...I'm sure..."
Anka smiled with a small sense of satisfaction as she stood.
“I go now… to do God’s will, and leave you all...to do as you will.”
Anka rose into the sky with all the majesty that one would have believed of an angel… but her purpose was a dark one indeed on this day. She pushed herself higher and higher… as she held tight to the Spear of Destiny… the Holy relic with which she had use to slay the guardian of The Veil… the place between Heaven and Earth. Now that the barrier lay open and Revenant’s promised army stood at the ready… there would be war in Heaven… bloody war to rival that which loomed over Empire City between metas and humans. The crowd watched as Anka ascended out of sight… apparently piercing Heaven itself.
Abby directed them to come and help her with Brandon's body. As they scrambled to help, they were all shaken to their core by a massive clap of thunder...
BOOM
Another crack of thunder rolled across the sky that seemed to shake the very ground underneath the whole of Empire City. All eyes turned to the heavens as the stars winked out and lightning streaked across the sky in all directions. Fear gripped the crowd as it seemed that the very sky would tear open.
THOOOM
THOOOM
THOOOM
The people turned their faces upward as the rain fell down…
plop…
plop…
plop…
They looked at one another in amazement… shock… fear. The rain that fell from the sky was as blood… the war in Heaven had begun…
